Brinkmann Single LED Light

First Impressions:   This light was a little larger than I expected when I first received it. It seems to be slightly large  for a light running off just 2 AA batteries.  Fit and finish is very good.  The rubber grip feels very secure in your hand.   The lens is what makes this light very nice.  The light output is Very focused and clean.

Light Output:  The color of the led is slightly blue, but still very bright.  The hotspot is about 2′ at a distance of  11 feet.  Around the hotspot is a much softer halo of light.  The color is slightly blue, but this doesn’t seem to make the light dim at all. The flooding light around the hotspot is a little more on the green side.  The light is Very clean and uniform. With only a few lines or blemishes.

Size & Weight:   As stated above, the light was a little larger than I imagined.  However, this does not stop it from being functional. The thickness of the light feels good in you hand, especially due to the rubber grip.  The light is not near as heavy as it looks. It is actually a little lighter than the MiniMag.

Run Time:   This light runs off 2 AA batteries.  I have had the same batteries in it for at least 6 months!  Although I don’t use the light every day, the light output is still very good.  The solid state circuitry is rated as giving more than 20 times the runtime of standard 2 AA lights.  I have yet to kill a set of batteries in it, so the final runtime will be added soon.  The LED has a rated life of 100,000 hours. Which is the usual standard for LED lights of this type.

Construction:   The light is made of ABS plastic, and for the most part, is very strong. However, the case can be scratched and dinged easily.  This does not seem to discolor the plastic too much. Deep scratches leave dark gray marks.

The Real World:  The light is very usable for most small purposes.  With the exception of its shape, and the lack of a lanyard hole.  The light will easily roll off a table if laid on its side.  The light can be stood on its tail, but, the button switch sticks out just enough to make the light rest on it, and wobble around a little bit. Brinkmann clams the light to be water and shock resistant.  I have had the light in light rain, and dropped it MANY times. Besides a few nicks and dings, the light functions perfectly.

Pros:   Very focused and smooth light output.  Bright for a single LED 2 AA light.  Long Run time.  Good grip.

Cons:   No lanyard hole.  Large for single LED 2 AA light.  Tends to roll off tables.

Conclusion:   Overall, I am happy with this light. Great for small, around the house jobs.  Light weight and durable. The light is a bit clumsy though. It can be hard to hold sometime due to its thick body.  My biggest complaint is the lack of a lanyard hole.  The light would be a lot more functional with one, and I wouldn’t have to sit it down, and then have it roll off the table.  The button switch should also be more recessed so that the light will rest on its tail better.  All in all, I cant really complain about the light, seeing how it only cost $12 from Wal-mart.  If you are looking for a good, cheap, bright light to use for small jobs, the Brinkmann is a good choice.  Especially being somewhat disposable due to the low price.
